David Sedaris Gains Popularity for Highlighting the Challenge of Communicating with Liberals

What makes conversations with the left so challenging? Well, some online commentators have suggested they often act as if they don’t understand basic concepts.

David Sedaris, the comedian, illustrates this scenario aptly. He once quipped about a hypothetical situation involving a younger Donald Trump. It’s notable because his work frequently sheds light on the quirks of his social class. Most people might relate to some of his experiences, like his recent troubles during a walk in Portland, Oregon.

In one incident, Sedaris described encountering several people by a baby carriage. A woman gave the carriage a notable thump, then, upon his approach, a couple of off-leash dogs attacked him. One actually bit him below the knee. Sedaris recounted how, when he pointed out that the carriage was empty, the woman with the dogs dismissed his experience and resumed her activities.

It’s understandable that individuals struggling with addiction might not exhibit much empathy, yet one would think Sedaris would receive a bit more sympathy. After all, his injury could resonate with a broader audience.

During a book signing where he spoke about the incident, a woman remarked that addicts, particularly those with opioid disorders, face significant struggles. Sedaris questioned this perspective, pointing out that he had been bitten by the woman’s dog.

Another voice chimed in, suggesting that people like the dog’s owner are in no condition to care for their pets, which seemed to strike a chord for Sedaris. He wondered why there appears to be such hesitance in addressing the issue of dangerous animals. Does age or status change how seriously we take these matters? What if he were a baby or an elderly person—would there be more compassion then?

Sedaris mused on the peculiarities of sympathy in these situations. Why does it seem acceptable for certain demographics to allow their dogs to behave aggressively? He posed the question: how did this become a principle of the left? Is it merely a case of certain individuals not being held accountable?

His story caught some traction online, racking up around 500,000 views. Commentary surrounding it suggested that he highlighted a significant apathy within the city’s culture. People often adopt double standards regarding behavior, especially concerning marginalized groups, until those behaviors start reflecting back upon them.
