David Spade Reflects on Early Days and Corey Haim
David Spade recently reminisced about his early career during a conversation on the “Fly on the Wall” podcast with his co-host Dana Carvey. They discussed the 2003 comedy film “Dickey Roberts: Former Child Star,” where Spade portrayed a former child actor down on his luck.
This film, co-produced by Adam Sandler, brought together several well-known former child stars, such as Corey Feldman and Barry Williams. There was even a memorable scene where the cast performed a musical number together.
Spade brought up Corey Haim, referencing him as Feldman’s buddy. He recalled a moment after filming when he walked to lunch and jokingly asked, “Would you like to get today’s daily allowance?” Haim had been in a difficult spot, having passed away in 2010 at 38, struggling with substance abuse issues.
Spade reflected on a past conversation with Haim, where he felt uncertain about his friend’s situation, wondering aloud, “Was that stupid? Was it that f-my idiot?” He noted the challenges young actors face, especially when they rely heavily on parental support. It’s a tricky dynamic, isn’t it? Parents tend to assert ownership over their children’s earnings, only for the kids to face abrupt reality once they hit adulthood.
Haim succumbed to pneumonia during an ongoing battle with addiction in 2010, a situation exacerbated by flu-like symptoms he experienced prior to his passing. Interestingly, authorities didn’t find any illegal drugs in his apartment at the time.
His mother, Judy, shared her struggles with cancer during that difficult period, revealing how much Haim was there for her. “He was a good boy. I’m devastated by his death,” she said, highlighting the depth of their relationship.
Feldman also spoke about Haim’s loss on his blog, describing him as a “wonderful, beautiful, tormented soul.” In another perspective, Nicole Eggert reflected on her two-year relationship with Haim, noting both the good times and the challenges brought by his addiction.
Eggert remembered enjoying their time together on set, but there were heavy moments that made her uneasy. She recalled the first time she became aware of his drug use, remarking on the darkness that surrounded their relationship.
While they had plans of a future together, much of their time was overshadowed by Haim’s addiction struggles. Eggert often found herself caring for him during his rough patches, taking him to the hospital when things got serious.
After some time living together, she realized the extent of Haim’s challenges and felt compelled to step back from the relationship. “I couldn’t live with it, and I couldn’t tolerate it,” she admitted. It was a tough, but necessary decision for her mental health.
Though they eventually drifted apart, Eggert maintained a sense of connection with Haim. “I always thought he was a friend forever,” she said, sharing a sense of nostalgia and lingering affection for their bond.
