The recent improvement of the Mets hasn’t altered David Stearns’ intentions regarding managerial changes at the end of the season.
On Monday, Stearns mentioned that he still anticipates interim manager Andy Green will transition back to the front office next year.
Green, who took over after the dismissal of Carlos Mendoza in June, was previously the vice president of player development.
The Mets have experienced a strong run, winning 10 out of their last 13 games, and currently hold a record of 23 wins to 22 losses under Green’s leadership.
“My prediction, and Andy’s prediction, is that he’s going to be back in the front office, and right now there’s no reason to think otherwise,” Stearns stated before the Mets’ narrow 2-1 victory over the Padres at Citi Field.
When questioned about the qualities Green may convey to Stearns regarding a new candidate for the managerial position, Stearns replied, “Once we reach that point, we’ll have a more extensive conversation about what we desire from our next coach. I don’t believe now is the appropriate time to delve into that.”
Stearns also expressed confidence in Green’s established connections with the younger players. “They know him, and he knows them,” he noted. “He also has some familiarity with a few of our veteran players, so it’s not entirely fresh for anyone involved. I think any time a manager steps into a new role, having those existing relationships is definitely an advantage.”
Turning to Jorge Polanco, who has only participated in two games defensively since joining the team as their primary first baseman last winter due to an ankle issue, Stearns commented that he doesn’t necessarily need to see Polanco play this season to assess him for the next year. “The priority for me is getting him in much better shape physically in 2027 than he was this year,” Stearns remarked.
Meanwhile, Luis Robert Jr. returned to center field following his first major league start in left field just a day earlier. Green stated that the next step for Robert’s growth involves consecutive starts in left field.
