David Wright’s Jersey Retirement Ceremony
Captain America has finally received his much-anticipated honor.
On July 19th, the New York Mets celebrated the retirement of David Wright’s jersey before a game against the Cincinnati Reds at Citifield.
Along with the jersey retirement, the seven-time All-Star will also be inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame, making him one of only two players—alongside Tom Seaver—to achieve both distinctions on the same day.
The heartfelt ceremony looked back on Wright’s impressive career, during which he hit 242 home runs, drove in 970 runs, and helped lead the team to the 2015 World Series. He earned both Gold Glove and Silver Slugger awards.
“Words can’t express how grateful I am to the city and Mets fans,” the now 42-year-old shared. “For 15 years, I felt like I had 40,000 friends and family in the crowd every night. It was a lifelong honor to be your captain. This recognition really belongs to all of you.”
It seems likely that his former teammate Jose Reyes and manager Terry Collins will be attending, although it’s not confirmed who else will join in the pre-game festivities.
If you’re interested in attending, last-minute tickets are still available.
As of now, the lowest ticket price is around $75, which includes fees for vibrant seating.
For those looking for more affordable options, 100-level seats start at $103.
If that’s a bit steep, consider attending a Sunday game when the Mets will be giving away David Wright bobbleheads. Tickets for that game start at just $17.
