Davidson women’s basketball cancels rest of season

Davidson canceled the remainder of the women’s basketball season Friday due to a “significant number of injuries” that left several players available.

The Wildcats (18-8) had one game left in the regular season, Saturday’s game against St. Louis, but it was forfeited.

The Atlantic 10 school in Davidson, North Carolina, will not participate in the postseason tournament.

“While we are extremely disappointed to not be able to finish the season on a strong note, we feel this is the best decision for our scholar-athletes,” Athletic Director Chris Clooney said. in a statement.

Davidson said he made the decision due to the “physical, mental and emotional toll” of an “unlucky and injury-plagued season.”

Forfeited games do not count toward the Wildcats’ record.

He finished with a winning percentage of .692, the highest since 2006-07.

Director Gail Foulkes said: “No one wanted this to end like this, so this decision is not one we take lightly.” “Our young women’s team is the strongest, most caring and most competitive team I’ve ever been a part of. They’re a real joy to coach every day.”

Davidson withdrew from games against Dayton and Fordham and played Wednesday’s Senior Night against George Washington.

The Wildcats lost 45-40 with only seven players available.

They’re not the only team with injury issues this year.

TCU and Arizona found themselves in a similar situation in January, holding open tryouts to fill out their rosters.

The Horned Frogs canceled games against Kansas State and Iowa State before adding players.

Davidson won 12 of his first 13 games, including a win at Duke University.

“Despite the difficult nature of how this season unfolded, our team never wavered and continued to fight until the end,” Fulks said. “I am confident that there is no team in this country that could have met the challenges we faced with more grace, strength and adaptability than our young women. I am so proud of them. ”
