Dawn Staley Calls for Resolution in Auriemma Feud

Dawn Staley has decided it’s time to move past the drama with Geno Auriemma.

The head coach of South Carolina’s women’s basketball team urged fans to “turn the page” on the ongoing dispute that gained attention during the team’s Final Four triumph over Washington. “The women’s college basketball season has wrapped up, so it’s time to close that chapter on the semifinal game,” Staley emphasized in a statement on Tuesday. “I’ve spoken with Geno, and I want to clarify: I respect him greatly and acknowledge his contributions to the sport.”

“Moments don’t define a career. His influence on the advancement of women’s basketball is undeniable. The standards we see today in college basketball are largely due to his efforts, and that’s reaping benefits in the game,” she continued.

Staley’s focus is on what truly matters: enhancing the game, creating opportunities, and pushing forward. “That’s been my mission all along, and it hasn’t changed,” she noted.

The two coaches were previously united in the spotlight after a heated exchange on the court went viral, following the Gamecocks’ victory that halted the Huskies’ undefeated season. Reports indicated Auriemma was upset over Staley not shaking his hand before the game, which escalated into an altercation afterward.

After South Carolina’s defeat against UCLA in the national championship, Staley mentioned she still hadn’t had any communication from Auriemma. “That’s a question for Geno. I haven’t heard from him,” she told reporters. “Today is about UCLA. Let’s not overshadow that.”

Auriemma has expressed his intention to apologize for the incident in a forthcoming statement. “It contrasts with my usual approach and the standards we uphold here in Connecticut. I want to extend my apologies to the staff and team at South Carolina. My response was uncalled for,” he remarked.
