NEW YORK – Diddy Trial Continues
Judges are set to continue their deliberations on Tuesday in the ongoing sex trafficking trial of music mogul Shaun “Diddy” Combs. On Monday, they spent over five hours discussing the case but were unable to reach a verdict after receiving legal instructions from Judge Arun Subramanian.
The central question for the judges is whether the prosecutors have sufficiently proven the conspiracy and sex trafficking charges against Combs, which stem from events that began in early May.
Prosecutors claim that for two decades, Combs leveraged his fame and resources to engage in sexual activities with male sex workers, often while hosting drug-fueled parties where such acts were filmed.
On the other hand, the defense argues that the prosecutors are unfairly portraying private consensual activities from a swinger lifestyle and incidents of domestic violence involving clients as federal crimes.
If convicted on all counts, the 55-year-old Combs could face up to 15 years in prison. After pleading not guilty, he opted not to take the stand, allowing his attorneys to present their case through intensive cross-examinations of numerous witnesses, including some former employees who were hesitant to testify but were granted immunity.
As the judges began their deliberation on Monday, Combs was seen sitting at the defense table, facing a courtroom filled with family and friends who held hands in prayer. Once they finished praying, they gave a round of applause, which Combs reciprocated.
He also displayed two books he’s currently reading: “The Power of Positive Thinking” by Norman Vincent Peale and “The Benefits of Happiness” by Sean Achor.
An hour into the deliberation, a note was sent from the jury indicating concerns that one of the jurors might not be able to follow the court’s directions. However, instead of addressing the juror directly, the judge opted to remind the entire jury of their responsibilities regarding the law.
By the end of the day’s proceedings, the jury seemed to regain focus, seeking clarification on what constitutes drug distribution, a critical aspect of the conspiracy charges that will influence whether Combs is found guilty or acquitted.
