MELBOURNE, Australia — Dayana Yastremska defeated Linda Noskova 6-3, 6-4 at the Australian Open on Wednesday to reach her first Grand Slam singles semifinal.
The 93rd-ranked Ukrainian athlete needed to qualify for the main event, but she faced either Zhen Chingwen or Anna Kalinskaya, ranked 12th in the best four, and won in 78 minutes.
The Ukrainian is only the second Australian Open player to reach the women's singles semi-finals since Christine Storey in 1978.
“It's nice to make history because I wasn't even born then and it's been 2000 years,” she said. “I'm very happy and very tired.”
Noskova advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating top-ranked Iga Swiatek.
Later Wednesday, the men's No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz and No. 3 Daniil Medvedev will try to prepare for a blockbuster semifinal.
Alcaraz will face sixth seed Alexander Zverev in the evening session, while Medvedev will face ninth seed Hubert Hurkacz in the afternoon session.
