Day’Ron Sharpe looks to build on his successful season with the Nets

Dayron Sharpe’s Journey Post-Surgery

Even after ending this season with surgery, Dayron Sharpe managed to have a noteworthy year.

He’s focused on refining his body to elevate his performance in the 2026-2027 season.

“Everything is going pretty smoothly after the surgery. Right now, I’m just in rehab, trying to stay fit, and aiming for a productive summer,” Sharpe mentioned. “I feel like I can achieve more, I’ve definitely made progress this season, so it’s all about demonstrating growth and overall improvement.”

“I perceive this season as a growth period from my rookie year to now, so I want to expand on that and keep showing development in my career.”

Speaking with local media, it was his first chat since repairing a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb.

Sharpe averaged record highs of 8.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 2.3 assists, boasting an impressive shooting percentage of 60.1 overall. While he’s faced challenges finishing near the basket against taller centers, he’s made notable improvements in that area.

For years, he has worked to reshape his physique, shedding baby fat and improving his forward lean. Now, Sharpe aims to step it up further.

“My body remains a huge focus for me,” said the 24-year-old. “I aspire to be more explosive next season, which means I’m looking to dunk more on my opponents.”

“I believe my three-point shooting is strong, so I’ll carry on building my confidence in that space as well, getting more comfortable with the ball. With the style of basketball we play, a lot of it involves split games, so I need to be more at ease with the ball to make better choices when I have it.”

Part of his focus on reshaping his body is to enhance his vertical explosiveness—dunking on one end and protecting the rim on the other.

It also aims to ensure he can play more minutes, likely competing with Nick Claxton for a starting position.

“I think it’s a combination of both,” Sharpe said. “Being in shape has enhanced my verticality overall. I’ve lost a bit of weight, and the style of basketball I play lets me sustain that for longer stretches. So, it’s both aspects.”

Since arriving with the Nets, Sharpe’s been mainly a backup, but his consistent improvement has put him in a position to start.

After the Nets signed him to a two-year, $12.5 million contract last summer, they hold a $6.25 million team option for the upcoming season. Even with a shortened campaign, he outperformed expectations.

Will he discuss a long-term contract extension this summer? “I’m not sure,” Sharpe admitted. “I’ll go with whatever the team has planned for me.”

Sharpe’s offensive rebound percentage of 18.5 is the highest on record for a player with 200 games played. Yet, he’s also evolving in other areas of his game.

“It’s a testament to his work ethic and how much he’s improved,” coach Jordi Fernandez said. “I’ve been pleased not just with his production, but the kind of presence he has in the locker room. Dayron has a vibrant personality; everyone appreciates him, which is vital for team spirit. He’s driven to improve with no limits in sight.”

“We’ve worked on enabling him to play extended minutes, which he managed while Nick was sidelined. Those experiences matter. It’s not just me confirming this; during their strong performances, our defense also performed well. Sure, there’s room for improvement, but if he continues on this path, things should work out well.”
