'Days of Our Lives' actress Suzanne Rogers shares her Stage II cancer diagnosis

Suzanne Rogers Diagnosed with Cancer

This week, actress Suzanne Rogers, best known for her role as Maggie Horton on “Days of Our Lives,” disclosed that she has been diagnosed with cancer. The 82-year-old revealed she has stage II colorectal cancer, a situation she suspected for some time, stating, “something wasn’t right.”

She mentioned that she regularly undergoes colonoscopies, but her doctor advised her to have additional tests, including an MRI and a PET scan. When he suggested these, she sensed it was serious. “I knew it was so much more than that,” she recalled.

Rogers said the news felt like a shock, especially since she takes care of her health. “I was in shock for a few days,” she admitted, though her doctor expressed relief at catching it early. Following her diagnosis, she began treatment just three days after finishing her season on the show in June, enduring daily radiation and chemotherapy for six weeks.

Reflecting on her treatment, she noted that it was challenging to balance working five days a week with her medical regimen. “I really appreciated weekends when I didn’t have to see the doctor,” she shared, likening the appointments to a tiring obligation.

Fortunately, Rogers was able to keep her health issues private during the summer break from the show. “I didn’t have to disclose it right away, which was a relief,” she said. However, she will miss some episodes next year since “Days of Our Lives” is filmed months in advance.

As her recovery progressed, she felt gratitude for the support of her friends and co-workers. On-screen daughter Lindsay Godfrey often accompanied her during hospital visits. “When I had to get an IV, she held my hand,” Rogers recounted, illustrating the bond they share.

Despite keeping her diagnosis a secret from most of the cast, she appreciated the outreach from her colleagues who offered their support. “It was uplifting to hear from friends like Steven Nichols and others during such a tough period,” she noted. The producers reassured her that her role would be available once she felt strong enough to return.

After completing her treatment, Rogers expressed a sense of relief and optimism. “I feel great,” she told a reporter. “I’m heading back to work next week. I want to do my best without holding anyone back.” Though she still experiences some fatigue, her spirits are high as she notices improvements day by day. “I’m really happy to feel better and better,” she added.

Interestingly, she didn’t lose her hair during chemotherapy, which she found a bit surprising. “Some might doubt my experience, but honestly, I don’t care,” she asserted. “What matters is what I’ve been through and how I’ve come out stronger.”

Going through such a significant health battle has shifted her perspective. “Small worries seem trivial now,” she reflected. “When you face a challenge like this, you realize the importance of fighting through it. Prayers and support from friends and family helped me remain positive.”
