Mayor Muriel Bowser Not Seeking Re-Election

Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser announced on Tuesday that she will not pursue a fourth term, marking the end of her decade-long tenure in the capital.

Bowser, a Democrat who previously represented the 4th District on the D.C. Council, shared this decision in a video on social media. She expressed gratitude to the residents over the last ten years, stating, “Together, we’ve worked to restore trust in our government and ensure public safety.” She mentioned significant initiatives aimed at improving education, housing, and keeping D.C. residents engaged in the local government. “We built 36,000 homes, increased school enrollment, and graduation rates,” she added.

Her administration has also managed to lower unemployment to its lowest levels, maintain strong fiscal reserves, and complete the landmark Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge, the city’s largest infrastructure project.

Reflecting on her time in office, she noted the challenges faced during the pandemic and emphasized the importance of standing firm against external pressures. “We’ve laid a strong foundation for our city’s economy and public services,” she said, stressing the need to continue advocating for D.C. as a potential 51st state and to protect investments in various crucial sectors.

Bowser remarked, “Trust was placed in me a decade ago to bring positive change to my hometown. I’ve cherished that opportunity and have dedicated my energy to our shared goals.” She concluded her address with a call to action for the coming year, suggesting that there’s still much work ahead for D.C.

This announcement comes after a period of contention, where Bowser pushed back against plans involving federal intervention to restore security in the capital, specifically highlighting the deployment of the National Guard.

Earlier in August, she acknowledged ongoing efforts to enhance law enforcement cooperation, noting a significant increase in officer presence in the city, which she believed played a role in reducing crime rates. Yet, she also cautioned about the need to rebuild trust between communities and police.

The upcoming mayoral election in D.C. is scheduled for November 3, 2026. Recently, Council Members McDuffie and Johnny Louise George have been mentioned as potential candidates for the race.
