The D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force is gearing up for a significant initiative called “Summer Rush,” aimed at making Washington, D.C., the safest city in the U.S. as the nation prepares to celebrate its 250th Independence Day.
During a press conference on Friday, officials highlighted the achievements since the task force started last year, crediting the Trump administration with effectively addressing violent crime in the city.
Collaborative law enforcement efforts have led to almost 13,000 arrests, the confiscation of over 1,400 illegal guns, the capture of 32 murder suspects, and the rescue of 23 missing children.
Due to these aggressive measures, overall crime in D.C. has dropped by 26 percent. Homicides are down nearly 50 percent, and carjackings have decreased by 60 percent. The U.S. Attorney’s Office reported securing over 7,000 convictions in the last year.
Officials mentioned the focus of the summer effort will be on reducing a troubling “teenage takeover” that has disrupted the area and negatively impacted local businesses.
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro criticized the D.C. Council for not tackling this issue and introduced a zero-tolerance approach where legal responsibility shifts to the parents of juvenile offenders.
Under D.C. law, parents could face charges for contributing to their children’s delinquency. Penalties for failing to supervise teenagers or allowing them to skip school might include fines, court-mandated classes, and potential jail time of up to six months.
“Law-abiding taxpayers shouldn’t bear the brunt of parental neglect,” Pirro stated. “If parents don’t step up, we will.” She emphasized that taxpayers won’t have to subsidize the chaos resulting from neglectful parenting.
Officials noted the task force aims for excellence, with various federal agencies expected to deploy personnel and advanced technology to dismantle remaining criminal networks.
A formal request has also been made for an additional 1,500 National Guard troops, increasing their presence to 5,000.
The task force plans to use high-visibility patrols, drones, K-9 units, and helicopters to deter crime. The DEA is set to enhance efforts to combat out-of-state drug trafficking, arguing that these criminals should be treated similarly to terrorists.
Additionally, the ATF is stepping up its actions to capture illegal firearms coming from Maryland and Virginia. Meanwhile, Homeland Security Investigations will double the number of agents on the streets targeting fraud and identity theft.
Pirro issued a strong warning regarding any potential political violence in the capital, stating that criminals will face severe consequences. She also mentioned that her office filed a notice seeking the death penalty for Elias Rodriguez, 31, accused of murdering two young Israeli embassy employees at the Capitol’s Jewish Museum on May 21, 2025.
