A tragic incident claimed the life of Jeff Sperbeck, a friend and business associate of NFL icon John Elway. According to the Riverside County Sheriff, it currently appears to be a “horrifying accident.”
Following a gathering after the Stage Coach Music Festival in La Quinta, California last Saturday night, Sperbeck fell from a golf cart that Elway was driving. He struck his head on the ground, and paramedics were called right away. The 62-year-old was quickly taken to the hospital and reported to be in critical condition.
Unfortunately, Sperbeck passed away on Wednesday morning.
On Friday, Sheriff Chad Bianco stated there are no indications of criminal activity at this point in the investigation. He specifically mentioned that there was no suspected wrongdoing by the medical staff at the scene.
“It’s standard for medical personnel—be it paramedics, hospital staff, or firefighters—to contact us if something appears off at the accident scene,” Bianco said. “That did not occur in this case.”
Despite this, Bianco assured that investigators will thoroughly examine all evidence, including drone footage, witness accounts, and additional information.
“We’re doing everything we can to ensure a complete investigation,” Bianco added.
Elway’s attorney, Harvey Steinberg, issued a statement on Friday.
“This has been an incredibly difficult time for everyone involved, and our thoughts remain with the Sperbeck family.
“As John processes this unimaginable loss, we appreciate the work of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office. The investigation validates what we already believe—this was a tragic accident, one that can occur in life in ways we cannot comprehend.”
