Tragedy struck near Yellowstone National Park as Idaho State Police reported a devastating crash that resulted in the deaths of seven individuals. The accident involved a tour van and a pickup truck.
Interestingly, while Yellowstone primarily lies in Wyoming, its western edge does touch parts of Idaho, and, well, also extends a bit into Montana to the north.
The officials are currently investigating the horrifying crash, which occurred around 7:15 p.m., approximately 16 miles from the park’s entrance.
“At around 7:15 p.m., ISP troopers responded to the collision at milepost 399. The crash involved a Dodge Ram pickup and a Mercedes passenger van. There were 14 people in the van and just the driver in the pickup. Tragically, six individuals in the van and the pickup truck driver lost their lives,” Idaho State Police stated.
“The van was serving as a tour vehicle. Because of the event’s severity and the need to notify relatives, we haven’t released any names, ages, hometowns, or nationalities yet. The Fremont County Coroner’s Office will share that information once it’s available,” they added.
Reports confirmed that the fatalities included six tourists from the van and the pickup driver, adding up to a total of seven deaths.
In addition, eight others involved in the crash suffered injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
“It’s a really dangerous highway,” commented Roger Merrill, a witness who saw the vehicles burning post-collision. “It gets extremely busy.”
Merrill mentioned that waiting for first responders was unnerving, given the crash’s location.
“It felt like it took forever for help to get here because of where it happened,” he said.
He also recorded a video showing a severely damaged red pickup truck and a passenger van engulfed in flames while emergency teams rushed to the scene.
