Death Toll Exceeds 40 at Swiss Nightclub, Inquiry Focuses on Indoor Fireworks

Tragic Fire at Swiss Ski Resort Claims Lives

In a tragic incident, a fire at an underground bar in a luxury Swiss ski resort has claimed the lives of at least 40 people. Authorities have noted that due to severe burns, it may take weeks to identify the deceased.

Swiss officials reported that around 119 individuals suffered injuries, with most sustaining serious burns and approximately 80 in critical condition. The majority of the victims are believed to be between the ages of 16 and 26.

Currently, police are looking into the fire as a case of negligent homicide, although no arrests have been made yet. During a recent press conference, the District Attorney General revealed that the investigation is leaning towards the sparkler-like fireworks that were being served on champagne bottles as the likely cause. Eyewitnesses and social media recordings suggest that a waitress, while carrying a champagne bottle fitted with a sparkler, accidentally struck the ceiling, which may have led to the blaze.

The District Attorney General commented, “It seems the fire was ignited by an incandescent candle placed too close to the ceiling on top of a champagne bottle, which led to a rapid and widespread incident.” While sparklers are legal and readily available for purchase, the appropriateness of their indoor use will also be examined.

Authorities have mentioned that they are unaware of when Le Constellation’s bar last underwent a safety inspection, and they have yet to receive any pertinent reports on the matter.

Due to the extensive injuries, many victims were airlifted to hospitals in neighboring countries like France and Germany, as the incident exceeded what local facilities could handle. In Swiss hospitals, 13 adults and eight children are treated for burns covering more than 60% of their bodies. The identification process for the deceased and injured is likely to be lengthy, and some names of the six survivors with severe burns remain unknown.

“Most of these individuals will need long-term treatment, followed by rehabilitation,” one official remarked.

Concerns still linger about how the fire ignited so easily and escalated so quickly. Photos shared on social media before the incident show the bar’s ceiling covered in sound-absorbing material likely made of polyurethane foam, which has drawn scrutiny.

Addressing this speculation, the District Attorney General mentioned, “Our investigation will certainly include the foam, but I cannot confirm its compliance just yet. Please refrain from making assumptions as we proceed.” Residents reported hearing explosions amid the fire, and early on, authorities stated they do not suspect a terrorist act. However, they now suggest that the initial blaze’s heat may have sparked a flashover, which can occur when flammable materials ignite simultaneously in a confined space.

A flashover happens when intense heat builds up at the ceiling, causing nearby flammable items to catch fire quickly. According to safety experts, modern furnishings burn faster and hotter, heightening the risk of such occurrences, which remain a leading cause of firefighter fatalities.

Interestingly, the distinctive gray “egg carton” foam on the bar’s ceiling has drawn parallels to a devastating 2015 nightclub fire in Bucharest, Romania, where 64 people lost their lives due to a similar combination of pyrotechnics and flammable materials. Following that tragedy, widespread public anger over safety regulations led to governmental changes in Romania.
