Police investigating possible serial killer after 5 deaths linked to popular trail
Dr. David Hayes, a criminologist, has expressed the challenges of investigating these recent crimes. He mentioned that unhoused individuals often lack the physical and digital “footprints,” like cellphone data or structured daily routines that most people might have. As a result, establishing connections between the cases becomes much more complicated. If it turns out that these cases are linked, it becomes a heart-wrenching situation of a predator targeting extremely vulnerable individuals.
There’s growing concern as authorities suspect a potential serial killer may be lurking around a popular river trail near Michigan State University. Reports indicate that five deaths have taken place over the past year, with some suggesting that the suspect might have been attacking people during nighttime hours.
In light of recent events, the university’s Department of Police and Public Safety is urging students to stay alert when going out after dark. They’ve implemented enhanced security measures along the MSU section of the River Trail, including more LED lighting and emergency phones, along with regular patrols by police officers on bikes.
“We encourage students to be mindful of their surroundings and take sensible precautions, especially at night,” officials said. This advice follows a tragic series of events, one of which involved a 22-year-old named Daniel Lusk, who was fatally stabbed near the trail.
The stabbing incident took place less than a mile from campus, raising alarms among both students and residents. It’s unsettling to think about, really—so close to where people gather, go to class, or just hang out.
Lansing Police arrested a suspect, Edward Joseph Smith, on September 3, in connection with Lusk’s stabbing. However, he has not been charged with any crimes related to the other deaths. Lansing’s Mayor Andy Schor reassured the community, stating that the river trail and downtown area remain safe, emphasizing the increased police presence around the clock.
Currently, all five victims appear to be unhoused White men, and the investigation is still active. It’s just deeply troubling to think that someone might be targeting such vulnerable individuals, you know?
