Sen. Peter Welch (D-VT), who has called on President Joe Biden to drop out of the 2024 presidential race, said on WBUR’s “Here and Now” on Thursday that the debate “was really a case of age issues. And you can’t deny that age issues and vision issues.” But if President Biden continues to run, Welch would support him.
co-host Celeste Headley asked. [relevant exchange begins around 3:00] “There are a lot of Democrats who say they’ll support Joe no matter what decision he makes. If he doesn’t withdraw, do you think you’ll still support him?”
Welch responded: “I would, but I think it would be much better if he stepped down. We would all support our nominee.”
Welch later added: “[W]”What we saw in that debate is unforgettable, and I think Americans have correctly concluded that it was not just a debate blunder (as we all are), but a symptom of age issues. It’s in people’s minds, and it’s not going to go away.”
Welch added that Democrats have “serious questions arising from what we saw in that debate. There are real age issues and vision issues that cannot be denied.”
