Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a prominent figure in the Democratic Party, has been declared the victor in the somewhat contentious primary for Florida’s 20th Congressional District.
The former chair of the Democratic National Committee shared her intentions to run for this district following the recent redistricting of her previous area.
She stated, “The voters in this district deserve representatives who will share their daily lives and fight for them, not outsiders who parachute into the race when it suits them.”
The situation has quickly become a divisive topic among Democrats, particularly regarding the need for black representation in historically black districts.
A nearly unanimous statement from DNC members in Florida released in May emphasized, “Our party cannot credibly condemn the Republican Party’s dismantling of black political power while treating one of Florida’s few remaining black-majority districts as a political opportunity for an incumbent seeking a safer seat.”
Despite the backlash, Schultz secured a straightforward victory in the primary on Tuesday and is set to compete against Florida Republican Brent Andersen in the upcoming general election.
After the primary results, Andersen expressed his frustration in a statement to Blaze News.
He remarked, “I live in this district with my family. Debbie Wasserman Schultz does not. She is a career politician in Washington state who decided to run here only after redistricting made her old seat more competitive.”
He added, “For decades, the 20th District has been represented by people who actually live in the communities they serve. The voters in this district deserve representatives who will share their daily lives and fight for them, not outsiders who parachute into the race when it’s convenient. That’s the choice they have in November.”
Andersen, who identifies as a conservative businessman and committed social worker, has a campaign website that offers further details.
CNN highlighted that Schultz was the only white candidate participating in the primary alongside four other Democratic contenders.
Furthermore, Schultz has faced critiques from some within the Democratic Party due to her significant loss to Donald Trump in 2016.
