Debra Messing Endorses Republican Bruce Blakeman for New York Governor
Debra Messing recently defended her choice to support Bruce Blakeman, a Republican candidate backed by Trump, for the governor position in New York. In a detailed post on Instagram, the actress, who has always identified as a Democrat, expressed her longstanding commitments to voting rights, the LGBTQ+ community, and gun control. However, she mentioned that her growing worries about life in New York City have influenced her stance.
“I still stand by every one of those principles,” Messing stated, noting that her feelings about her beloved city and state have evolved. In her previous political choices, she supported influential figures such as Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton but has now shifted to endorse Blakeman, the executive of Nassau County, highlighting concerns about safety and affordability.
Messing reflected on the struggles of everyday New Yorkers—small business owners, teachers, nurses, and young people—who are finding it tough to cope with the escalating cost of living. “It becomes a challenge when the people who make New York what it is can’t afford to live here anymore,” she warned, emphasizing that this trend threatens the city’s unique opportunities.
The actress expressed an increasing unease regarding public safety, describing the violence seen in urban areas and transit systems as frightening. Drawing from her experience supporting Governor Kathy Hochul in the past, she remarked that she didn’t feel better off than she was four years ago, prompting her to reconsider how she approaches her voting choices.
Messing encouraged others to reflect similarly, asking, “Not which party am I supposed to vote for? But who do I believe will actually make life better for the people I love and the place I live?” She concluded that for her, Blakeman’s priorities align more closely with what she values—issues surrounding affordability and safety. She acknowledged that while she may not agree with all of his positions, she believes he is the best choice given the current issues affecting New Yorkers.
“No candidate is perfect,” she added, “but on the issues that matter right now, I think he is the right choice. The President’s endorsement isn’t my primary concern.” Messing further stated her belief that party affiliation shouldn’t dictate every vote she casts, affirming her commitment to making decisions based on her conscience and priorities.
