Debra Messing Faces Backlash for Sharing Controversial Meme
Actress Debra Messing, known for her role in Will & Grace, recently shared a meme mocking newly elected New York Mayor Zoran Mamdani, labeling him a “real communist jihadist” to her 1.4 million Instagram followers. This meme quickly gained traction on social media after being promoted by a Persian Jewish account. The post included a fabricated voter ballot, distinguishing two candidates simply as “Democrats” and another, Mamdani, as “an actual communist jihadist who quotes Karl Marx and despises America.”
Messing, a long-time supporter of Israel and Andrew Cuomo’s mayoral campaign, faced substantial criticism for sharing the post. In the lead-up to the election, she voiced strong opposition to Mamdani and championed Cuomo, suggesting he had the necessary “decades of experience” to lead New York City, which she argued is currently “not safe.”
“I see the enthusiasm behind Mr. Mamdani. He’s young and energetic, but, you know, he’s never actually held a job,” Messing commented. “At 33, New York City is a massive responsibility, being the financial heart of the country, and I really wonder if he has the experience needed for such a role.”
The political views of Hollywood figures like Messing rarely align with those of Republican leaders, at least until now. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer reacted sharply to Mamdani’s win, declaring that it signals the end of the Democratic Party as it has been known and warning that Mamdani’s policies could lead to serious decline for the city.
Mamdani, who identifies as a Democratic Socialist, successfully won the New York City mayoral election, overcoming both Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. This result reflects broader trends within the Democratic Party, raising questions about the direction of its leadership and policies.
