DEI Is ‘a Good Thing,’ But It’s Racist to Say Harris is a DEI Pick

On Tuesday’s broadcast of MSNBC’s “The ReidOut,” host Joy Reid said “DEI is actually a good thing,” but it’s racist to claim that Vice President Kamala Harris, a potential 2024 Democratic presidential candidate, was recruited because of DEI.

After playing a video of Republican criticism of Harris and New York Attorney General Letitia James (D), including Harris’ comments that she was a DEI hire, Reid said, “It makes me wonder what these two women have in common. I don’t know for sure, but I’m sure we’ll find out.”

Later, James said the Republican Party “is so scared, and they have nothing else but racism and sexism, and so they just appeal to the racists among us, the white supremacists among us, and that’s it. The reality is that Vice President Kamala Harris is qualified, she’s often underestimated, and she’s exceeded expectations, so I support her wholeheartedly. And it’s unfortunate that individuals are amplifying racism and sexism, and that’s totally inappropriate, and I’m not going to dignify that by responding to that.”

Reed responded, “That’s correct. DEI is actually a good thing, whether it’s in its natural form or as a formally elected official. You’ve been a very successful statewide elected official. Being attorney general means you’re statewide elected. That was the case when Vice President Harris was attorney general.”
