Manager Deion Sanders has a warning for NFL teams interested in Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter.
Hunter, a two-way star who followed Sanders to Colorado from Jackson State, hopes to continue playing both wide receiver and cornerback after being drafted.
Coach Prime was even more emphatic this week, suggesting that if the team isn't ready to have Hunter play on both sides of the ball, there's no need to even draft him.
“He will. Otherwise they shouldn't draft him,” Sanders said when asked about Hunter's future in the NFL. Interview with Rich Eisen on Friday. “Don't do that. And I'm going to make sure of that. If you're not going to give him a chance to play on both sides of the ball, don't draft him. Come on, you can get creative. . He doesn't have to do what we did to him here and play every snap.”
Sanders, a Pro Football Hall of Famer who played as a two-way player, believes Hunter's talent is too extraordinary to be confined to one position.
Hunter, who gained national attention for his performance at the University of Colorado, has consistently demonstrated elite skills at both wide receiver and cornerback.
“Now we can be creative,” Sanders added of Hunter's potential in the NFL. “You don't have to do what we did with him here and play every snap, but… let's say he's a starting corner. He's going to have to be in your nickel package… or , he's probably going to be your best receiver, so you have to spread the package out on offense. And if your best receiver is sitting on the bench and can't get open and can't get the ball down the field. , you'll look like a fool. Or vice versa.
“Your best corner isn't on the field and they're bombing you right now – and he's on the sideline with you.”
During the 2024 regular season, Hunter had 1,192 receiving yards with 92 catches and 14 touchdowns.
He also recorded four interceptions and 11 passes defensed.
His dynamic playmaking ability has garnered praise across the board and established him as one of the most versatile NFL prospects in recent memory.
Hunter is expected to be one of the top picks in the 2025 NFL Draft, along with Sanders' son and Colorado's starting quarterback, Sheduar.
