Dion Sanders, the head coach for Colorado, is dealing with some health issues that have kept him from attending the summer football camp in Boulder recently. According to various reports, including one from USA Today, his absence has raised concerns.
He also missed the annual Sickle Cell Disease Research symposium, where he was slated to be a keynote speaker, citing an “unavoidable last-minute scheduling change” that prevented his attendance, as noted by a tweet from the foundation.
In a YouTube livestream from his home in Texas, Deion Sanders Jr. mentioned that his father is “feeling better,” but he didn’t elaborate much on the specifics.
“He will share what he’s been through when he’s ready,” Deion Jr. said.
He added, “I’m not sure when we’ll return to Boulder. I think I’ll go there after my dad leaves.” It seems he wants to spend time with him for now.
It’s notable because Dion Sanders usually is front and center on social media, making his absence from recent events all the more striking.
This is the first time in the last two years, since he took the job in December 2022, that he has missed these summer camps. His promotional materials are still up on the school’s athletics website, listing upcoming events, including youth soccer camps and a girls’ clinic.
Though he attended the school’s spring game back in April and was present during his son’s moment at the NFL Draft, he hasn’t been in the spotlight much lately.
Just last month, he shared thoughts on a podcast, hoping for a good recovery for a former NFL player he mentioned. He indicated feeling quite drained, but still promoted some products during the conversation.
Sanders remarked, “I haven’t done any media or much of anything…I’ve lost about 14 pounds. I’ll bounce back, but I think I needed this time.” His recent social media activity has included a mix of uplifting posts and even some personal moments, like sharing pictures of fresh eggs from his chickens.
His last post on X was fairly reflective. He mentioned, “You know you’re facing a task that seems impossible… The enemy wants your heart, they want to make you doubt what God can do!”
Sanders has faced health challenges in the past, including surgery in 2023 to fix a blood clot in his leg. Earlier reports indicated he had to undergo multiple surgeries, including the amputation of two toes in 2022, underlining the ongoing nature of his medical concerns.
