Coach Dion Sanders Shares Faith Journey After Bladder Cancer Battle

Dion Sanders, the college football coach, expressed his deep belief in God during a press conference on Monday, crediting divine intervention for his healing from bladder cancer. He was joined by Dr. Janet Kukleja, who discussed the medical procedures he underwent, including the removal of a tumor from his bladder.

Dr. Kukleja revealed that a new bladder was constructed using a portion of Sanders’ small intestine, highlighting the serious nature of his surgeries, which totaled 14 since 2021. Sanders opened up about the lingering challenges post-surgery, particularly his loss of bladder control. He humorously remarked, “I can’t pee like I used to,” acknowledging how dependent he has become on facilities, even joking about it.

With gratitude, he praised God for guiding him through this trying time, stating, “Everyone who gets upset when I start talking about the Lord, well, that’s just me.” He reflected on his journey by asking, “God, why me?” yet emphasized the blessings he’s experienced, such as becoming a respected head football coach and a father to five lovely children.

During his fight with illness, Sanders shared his desire to understand God’s plan for him, saying, “Whatever you are doing, please tell me what it is.” He felt guided even in his darkest moments, expressing, “I saw you have my back. When no one knew I was going through hell, I saw you in the middle of a storm.” His faith became a cornerstone for coping with his trials.

Sanders conveyed that he believes these hardships are part of a greater purpose. “I know He’s trying to expand on me,” he said, acknowledging that he’d endure the pain because he trusts the outcome. When confronted about facing “death,” he confidently stated, “I stared at the face,” reinforcing his belief that God wasn’t ready to take him just yet.

Ultimately, Sanders’ message underscores the strength of faith and resilience amidst life’s challenges.
