Deion Sanders Shares His Journey Post-Cancer

Following a tough battle with cancer, Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders is adjusting to what he calls his “new normal.” In a recent episode of the “Colorado Football Coach Show,” he opened up about how his recent health challenges have altered his daily life. Mark Johnson, an NFL Hall of Famer, joined him, discussing his own cancer journey, which resulted in him having his bladder removed.

“It’s crucial to keep your bladder empty,” Sanders shared, adding that he sometimes uses a catheter before games to avoid any urgent situations. “When you feel it, it’s better to head to the bathroom because you don’t want any accidents. Just being honest—I’m clear now.”

In July, at a University of Colorado press conference, the 58-year-old Sanders detailed his health struggles, including undergoing surgery to create a new bladder from his intestines following the removal of his original bladder.

According to Dr. Janet Kucreja, who specializes in urological oncology at the University of Colorado, Sanders is now cancer-free, a sentiment echoed by ESPN in their coverage of his recovery.

Sanders expressed a desire to help others facing similar battles, saying, “Wherever I go, I meet people sharing their own experiences with cancer, thanking me for speaking up. They’re dealing with the same issues as I am.”

Now in his third season in Colorado since joining the team in 2023, Sanders’ family also has ties to the football world. His 23-year-old son, Chedur Sanders, was picked by the Browns in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft after a surprising drop. Meanwhile, Shiro Sanders, 25, signed with the Buccaneers but faced challenges, including being released after a preseason incident.

As for the Buffaloes, they began their season on August 29 with a 27-20 loss to Georgia Tech. Sanders faced some criticism for his time management during the game, but the team rebounded successfully last Saturday, winning 31-7 against the University of Delaware. They are scheduled to face the University of Houston this Friday.
