Shedeur Sanders Impresses in NFL Preseason Debut
Deion Sanders had quite the night watching his son, Shedeur, shine in his NFL preseason debut. The Hall of Fame coach for Colorado Football was on hand as Shedeur participated in the quarterback competition for the Browns
As the second youngest of Deion’s five children, Shedeur threw two touchdown passes and made some impressive plays during Cleveland’s 30-10 win over the Panthers.
“Yes Rood! Yes! @shedeursanders,” Deion shared in a post on X around 7:48 PM ET on Friday.
While he didn’t mention his son directly in two later tweets, Deion did express positive sentiments.
In a typical NFL preseason, fans might overlook the fifth quarterback’s debut, but Shedeur’s last name ensured a spotlight on him that night.
Once projected as a potential No. 1 overall pick, Shedeur ended up being selected by Cleveland in the fifth round, a drop of 144 picks.
Deion, who had coached Shedeur at Jackson and Colorado for four years, believed something special was about to happen for his son.
Interestingly, Shedeur had asked Deion to leave Browns camp earlier this month.
“He’s really prepared right now,” Deion said during a press conference. “A lot of people are treating it like a preseason game, but he’s approaching it like it’s a real game. That’s just how he rolls.”
He added, “I can’t wait to see how he performs tonight, but it’s going to feel a bit strange. He’s going to be a problem for the Panthers, I can guarantee that.”
Shedeur held his ground against Carolina, completing 14 of 23 passes and rushing four times for 19 yards.
In the game, he connected with wide receiver Kaden Davis for both touchdowns, one tying the game 7-7 in the second quarter and the other putting his team ahead 14-7 shortly afterward.
Reflecting on his performance, Shedeur noted, “I did some things right and made mistakes. But I know I won’t make the same mistake twice.”
This debut could play a crucial role in Cleveland’s four-way quarterback competition, which includes veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett, along with fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel.
As ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported, there’s a fair chance the Browns may keep all four on their roster, even though that’s not typical for most teams.
Should Shedeur continue to showcase solid performances in the preseason, discussions will likely grow around his potential as a long-term solution, echoing his father’s sentiments in Cleveland.
