Delgado Challenges Hochul in 2026 Election

If Governor Kathy Hochul of New York seeks reelection in 2026, she could face significant challenges from her own lieutenant governor, Anthonio Delgado, who recently announced his candidacy.

Delgado made his intentions clear on social media, declaring, “New York, I’m not here to play the game. I’m here to change it. I’m running to become your next governor.” The 48-year-old also suggested that New York needs “bold and decisive transformative leadership.”

In an interview, Delgado pointed out that “people are hurt and New York deserves better leadership,” emphasizing the need for a change. He previously made history in 2018 by becoming the first African-American or Latino from upstate New York elected to Congress.

Hochul appointed Delgado as lieutenant governor in 2022, making him the first Latinx individual to hold statewide office in New York. However, their relationship has reportedly soured in recent years, leading Delgado to officially enter the race.

Hochul took office as New York’s first female governor in August 2021, following Andrew Cuomo’s resignation amid scandals. In the 2022 election, she narrowly defeated Republican Lee Zeldin, winning by just six points—Zeldin’s performance was notably strong for a Republican in a blue state.

Last July, Hochul confirmed her plans to run for reelection in 2026. Although recent polls from Siena University place her approval rating above water, many voters expressed a desire for other candidates instead. A recent survey revealed that only 36% of registered voters supported Hochul’s reelection, with 55% preferring alternatives.

The Democratic Governors Association voiced support for Hochul after Delgado’s announcement, highlighting her track record and commitment to issues like reproductive rights and community safety.

Meanwhile, some of Delgado’s fellow Democrats are cautious. Tom Suozzi, who unsuccessfully challenged Hochul in 2022, advised Delgado on social media, saying, “Antonio, you’re a talented guy but this may not be the most thought-out idea!”

Republicans are also gearing up for the 2026 race. Representative Elise Stefanik has criticized Hochul, branding her “America’s worst governor,” and suggested that Delgado’s challenge reflects a loss of support—not just from Republicans and independents, but from Democrats too.

Similarly, fellow Republican Representative Mike Lawler has expressed his intention to run, declaring that Hochul must be replaced by a Republican capable of restoring balance and common sense in Albany.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how these challenges will affect Hochul’s path to reelection.
