Delta Air Lines gives workers 5% raise, boosts starting pay

Delta Air Lines employees will receive a 5% across-the-board raise and the minimum starting wage will increase to $19 an hour starting June 1, the airline announced Monday.

“Delta’s leadership position stems from a simple concept that goes back nearly a century: Invest in your people first, and they will provide great service and experiences for your customers,” said the CEO. Ed Bastian said in a memo to all employees. “It’s just your job, and that’s what will always set us apart.”

The pay increase announcement comes about two months after Delta employees received an annual profit-sharing bonus worth 10.4% of their eligible earnings in February, or about one month’s salary.

The newspaper reported that the Flight Attendants Association is currently working to organize Delta Flight Attendants and hopes to collect enough signatures from employees to call for a union election by the end of the year.

About 20% of Delta’s employees are unionized, the lowest percentage of the four largest U.S. airlines, according to the Associated Press.
