Dem newcomer aims for history with primary win over wealthy controversial congressman

A Maryland Democrat, making his first appearance on the national political stage, won the state’s Senate primary against a wealthy and controversial lawmaker who spent millions of his own money on his campaign.

Prince George’s County Executive Angela AlsobrooksPotentially the first black woman from Maryland to be elected to the U.S. Senate, she defeated U.S. Rep. David Trone in a race called by The Associated Press.

He will now face former Republican governor Larry Hogan, but given Maryland’s strong Democratic leanings and Hogan’s popularity in the state, the competition could be tighter than expected. There is a possibility that it will happen.

Mr. Tron spent about $60 million of his own money trying to defeat Mr. Alsobrooks, but the many controversies and Mr. Alsobrooks’ popularity among state party officials seemed too much for him to overcome.

Allbrooks was first elected as Prince George’s County’s state’s attorney in 2010 and served the county until 2018 when he was elected state’s chief executive. She had never previously run for Congress.

Democrats are hoping black voters will rally around Mr. Allsbrooks’ potentially historic candidacy and overturn Mr. Hogan’s popularity.
