Dem Receives Support from Union Advocating for Undocumented Truck Drivers

Wisconsin Democrats Celebrate Union Support Amid Controversial Immigration Enforcement

In Wisconsin, Democratic lawmakers are expressing their excitement over backing from unions that are opposing the Trump administration’s crackdown on unsafe illegal immigrant truck drivers.

Rebecca Cook, a Democrat vying for the 3rd Congressional District, emphasized her endorsement from the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), stating, “I feel privileged to stand alongside the dedicated workers of AFSCME.”

With this backing, Cook, aiming to unseat Republican Rep. Derrick Van Orden, has signaled her intention to align with AFSCME’s initiative to ease the proof of citizenship requirements for industrial jobs, such as commercial truck driving. Reports indicate this comes as the federal government is actively pursuing the removal of foreign truck drivers and the deportation of undocumented individuals.

Recently, U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested 36 illegal immigrants driving commercial trucks in Arizona as part of a major operation.

Operation Checkmate aimed at enforcing immigration laws by targeting undocumented individuals operating commercial vehicles. In total, 56 illegal aliens were apprehended, with 36 found driving trucks without valid commercial driver’s licenses. Reportedly, some of these drivers had CDLs from various states, including California, New York, Washington, and Virginia.

Details reveal that the majority of those arrested were from India, while others were from Mexico, El Salvador, and Russia. Although many held employment authorization documents, these are no longer valid, and all individuals will be processed for deportation under federal law.

Dustin W. Caudle, Acting Chief of Patrol for the U.S. Border Patrol Yuma District, stated, “Operation Checkmate underscores our dedication to ensuring our roads are safe by preventing undocumented drivers from posing a danger to public safety. Our agents work daily to stop these individuals and avert potentially lethal crashes on our roads.”

As the government intensifies its efforts to identify and remove illegal truck drivers, accidents involving illegal drivers have notably resulted in fatalities on U.S. highways.

Recent reports highlighted a tragic incident where four Americans lost their lives due to a collision caused by a truck driver from Kyrgyzstan.

This follows other serious accidents linked to immigrant truck drivers. In November, concerns were raised about states possibly having issued around 194,000 CDLs to foreign truck drivers who haven’t met the Department of Transportation’s English language requirements.

“People often don’t understand English; they can’t interpret signs or grasp traffic rules. That’s definitely an issue,” said Duffy in an interview highlighting these concerns.

Reflecting on a year since President Trump’s trucking reforms, Duffy pointed out that these initiatives have led to the dismissal of over 20,000 non-English-speaking drivers, the cancellation of more than 28,000 improperly issued foreign CDLs, and the shutdown of numerous fraudulent driving schools. Additionally, persistently non-compliant states are now facing significant funding penalties.

However, Democrats like Rebecca Cook seem to be advocating for a continuation of policies under President Biden, allowing illegal drivers to remain on the roads, raising safety concerns for everyone.
