Dem Sen. Rosen Refuses to Debate GOP Challenger Sam Brown

Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-Nevada) reportedly turned down an invitation to debate her Republican opponent, Sam Brown.

by Daily Indy,outlet offered Governor Rosen was invited to debate Governor Brown at this year’s annual conference, IndyFest, similar to the 2022 gubernatorial debates. Governor Brown accepted the invitation, but Governor Rosen began setting conditions.

The team of Democratic Senator Jacky Rosen initially said they were OK with a mid-October date, but then started making demands. She said she would not have a debate unless it was televised live. Like the gubernatorial debate, it will probably be televised live on the day or shortly thereafter, but no promises can be made. They also insisted on no live audience. I also don’t like having a live audience at a debate, but this is a conference, and I would like to remind the audience to refrain from clapping and other explosive behavior, just like in 2022 (there was none in 2022). The Rosen team further demanded that the debate be televised in two languages, which cannot be guaranteed.

Rosen’s team told me a detailed list of terms will be released soon. This isn’t the first time I’ve done this sort of thing, and unlike other media people, I have always refused to negotiate debate terms with campaigns beyond the basics like whether or not there will be a podium. I can also understand if a campaign has already decided they don’t want to partner on a debate.

Rosen’s team never provided a written list of her demands, eventually saying in a follow-up email that “after reviewing the invitations and details from various potential hosts, we have decided to move in a different direction.”
