DeMarcus Cousins Apologizes After Altercation in Puerto Rico
DeMarcus Cousins expressed regret to fans following a confrontation with several spectators during a game in Puerto Rico’s professional basketball league.
The four-time NBA All-Star, who suited up for Metz de Guanabo in the Baron Sesto Superiana Cional League, was suspended for the remainder of the season after his team terminated his contract on Tuesday. He shared a message on his Instagram story, saying, “I want to apologise to Puerto Rican fans for my actions. I have great love and respect for the island,” accompanied by a Blue Heart emoji.
During the game on Monday, Cousins engaged in provocative gestures toward fans seated courtside, even grabbing one fan’s leg and exchanging heated words. It escalated when he grabbed another fan’s arm, seemingly reacting to an obscene gesture directed at him.
As the situation intensified, one of Cousins’ teammates stepped in to diffuse the confrontation. The 34-year-old player received his second technical foul and was ejected from the game.
While leaving the court, Cousins continued to argue with fans and appeared to reach out toward at least one person. Tensions rose, and some spectators reportedly threw a drink at him, leading to further chaos as he had to be restrained.
The Baroncesto’s Superior Nacional League announced that Cousins has been fined $4,250, with the possibility of an additional $5,750 fine in the future.
The Mets ultimately lost the game to Vaqueros de Bayamon, 101-92, with Cousins contributing 11 points and seven rebounds before his ejection.
The Mets organization issued a statement emphasizing, “We strongly condemn any form of violence and provocation, whether on or off the court. Safety, respect, and sportsmanship are non-negotiable values for this franchise.”
In his second season with the Mets, Cousins averaged 18.2 points per game and notched nine rebounds, helping the team reach the league semi-finals in 2023.
