Demi Lovato has revealed the dark side of becoming famous at a young age in her upcoming documentary, Child Actor.
In conversation with other former child stars, including Drew Barrymore, Kenan Thompson and Raven-Symoné, Lovato spoke about her childhood and what went on behind the scenes.
“Famous women signed a suicide petition,” the 32-year-old singer claims in the trailer for the Hulu documentary. “They said I should kill myself.”
The trailer did not include any additional details.

“I wouldn't be where I am today if it weren't for all the choices I've made to get to this point, but it came at a cost.”

The documentary, directed by Lovato, also features conversations between the actress and Barrymore about the first time she tried drugs, which Barrymore claims she was 10 years old at the time.
At one point, someone asked Lovato if she had the choice to do it all over again, would it be worth it?
“There's definitely no manual for how to make it in this industry at such a young age,” Lovato says in the trailer. “I wouldn't be where I am today if I hadn't made the decisions that I made, but they came at a cost.”

“I think when I got into this industry at a young age, there was a conscious decision to say, 'Am I willing to sacrifice a normal childhood for my hopes and dreams?'” Lovato told The Hollywood Reporter.
Lovato appeared on “Barney & Friends” at age 6. Her career as a Disney Channel star began with a role in “As the Bell Rings.” She appeared in 15 episodes before rising to stardom in “Camp Rock” in 2008. She was 15 when she co-starred with the Jonas Brothers (Kevin Jonas, Joe Jonas, and Nick Jonas).
She released her first album, Don't Forget, that same year.

In 2010, Lovato filmed “Princess Protection Program” with Selena Gomez before filming “Camp Rock 2.” Things started to go wrong during the “Camp Rock 2” tour. Lovato was 17 at the time and was drinking alcohol and using drugs like Adderall, according to her YouTube documentary.Simple and complexLovato ended up entering rehab after punching a backup dancer who exposed her drug use.
“I think I was over the edge mentally and physically,” she told The Hollywood Reporter, “and I didn't realize that being a child star could be traumatic. I don't think it's traumatic for everybody, but it was for me.”

“At Disney, you quickly become a role model, whether you like it or not,” Lovato explained. “And Disney Channel I was very popular at the time, so there was this unspoken pressure that if I made a mistake, there were millions of people trying to take my place.”
Lovato's documentary will premiere on Hulu on September 17th.
