Internal Struggles Within the Democratic Party

Moderate liberals are currently grappling with the rise of radical socialists within the Democratic Party.

On Tuesday, a cadre of Democratic Socialist candidates, endorsed by New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani, faced significant setbacks in the Democratic primary, managing to unseat two incumbents—Rep. Daniel Goldman and five-term Rep. Adriano Espaillat.

As the nature of the socialists who Mr. Mamdani supports comes to light, it’s becoming clear that these influential radicals might actually outnumber him.

In a recent interview on MS NOW, host Ali Velshi spoke with Darializa Avila Chevalier, a candidate who previously defeated Espaillat with 49.4% of the vote to his 45.9%. Even though critics have labeled her and others as “communists,” Avila Chevalier seems unfazed. In fact, recent commentary from former President Trump about the “communists” winning elections in New York only added fuel to the fire.

“Last night, Trump remarked on the election of communists in our local elections. There were three in the parliamentary elections and five in the state elections supported by Mamdani. All of them won,” Velshi pointed out. “How do we avoid looking like a GOP ad?”

Avila Chevalier has been under scrutiny for her past statements, including one where she expressed support for a complete overhaul of economic systems, including nationalization of utilities and healthcare. It’s worth noting that she recently deleted tweets that called for the seizure of properties from landlords, a statement that aligns well with the harsh critiques from her opponents.

During the interview, she argued that her focus is on creating a better future for her community and avoiding reactionary politics. “Honestly, for too long, the Democrats have been responding to Republican actions rather than presenting their own vision,” she said, despite the implications surrounding her political stance.

While Avila Chevalier claims to be forthcoming about her views, public perception—and previous social media activity—raise questions. Though she later suggested her perspectives have matured, comments from just a year ago might suggest otherwise.

Some of her tweets advocating for radical economic changes continue to circulate, leading many to consider Trump’s labeling of her as a “communist” to be justified. “In hindsight, I’ve evolved significantly and am devoted to my community’s development,” she noted, though some might find it hard to reconcile this view with her earlier statements.

Reflecting on her recent victory, she proclaimed it as a new chapter not just for her, but for her entire district, running under the banner of the Justice Democrats—a group that, notably, propelled figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez into prominence.
