Democrat Andre Carson Declines to Comment on Staffer Labeling Charlie Kirk as 'Nazi' and 'White Supremacist'

On Friday, Rep. Andre Carson (D-IN) characterized himself as a target of threats after his staff referred to the deceased conservative Charlie Kirk using terms like “Nazi” and “white supremacist,” describing him as “a victim of the violence he incited.”

Heather Harvey, who is the Senior Constitutional Liaison for Carson, had posted content on Instagram under the handle @the_smartass_staffer. Following the initial report by Breitbart News, both her Instagram and LinkedIn profiles have either gone private or been removed. Harvey, known for her active presence online with over 30,000 followers, often posted videos seemingly made from her office, funded by taxpayers.

As reported by Breitbart News early Friday, Harvey made a post after Kirk defended an act of assassination.

“Charlie Kirk isn’t some alien,” she stated in her post. “He is, in fact, a victim of the violence he has instigated.”

Harvey continued to share posts even before Breitbart’s report, prior to disabling her account.

“You will never gaslight me like the Nazis did,” she asserted, mentioning her refusal to read any shared posts.

More posts criticized those defending Kirk’s father regarding his relationships with his young daughters and avoided discussing the slain activist’s circumstances.

“Even if you succeed biologically, you cannot escape being a white supremacist,” read a post she shared, originally from users on Bluesky. “It’s not that complicated. Feeling like I might be losing my mind over this.”

The assassin targeted Kirk on Wednesday. He was leading a Q&A at a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. Kirk, one of the co-founders of the organization, has transformed it into a significant political and cultural force, facilitating discussions on civic matters in America.

A spokesperson for Carson did not respond to inquiries from Breitbart News about Harvey’s comments and was silent on whether she still held her position.

Shortly after Breitbart’s initial story, Carson made a statement on X, reiterating his previous views on violence, advocating for “compassionate dialogue instead of reactionary hatred.”

Carson’s new remarks did not mention Harvey’s posts. However, he did claim he had received death threats that day but didn’t elaborate on the nature of those threats.

“I want to be very clear. I absolutely condemn any form of violence,” he stated. “My career has been devoted to fighting against violence, first as a police officer, then at the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, and now as a senior member of the @houseintel Committee. Unfortunately, threats like this have become commonplace, and political violence has been normalized far too long. During these trying times, I seek to collaborate with colleagues across party lines to encourage understanding rather than hate.”

The threats faced by congressional members represent a serious and growing security issue. The US Capitol Police noted that they are addressing 14,000 threat assessments, an increase from 9,000 the previous year.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) is one member who has received threats and publicly criticized Harvey, referring to her by district rather than by name.

[Harvey] Greene also highlighted that Harvey’s partisan videos could negatively affect veterans’ access to timely care from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Harvey shared an unusual video that directed constituents in Georgia’s 14th Congressional District to contact Democratic Senators John Ossoff or Raphael Warnock, rather than their House representative.

Greene represents a district that was mentioned without much context.

Despite the partisan nature of Harvey’s advice, offices in larger states like Georgia, including Greene’s, have notably bolstered their staffing for veteran services compared to Senate offices.

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna also called for Carson to let go of Harvey following these events.

The National Republican Congressional Committee criticized Harvey’s remarks on X, saying they were “unacceptable.”

Carson’s lack of decisive action in his official response comes as Indiana’s Republican representatives and Gov. Mike Brown are considering mid-term adjustments to congressional districts.

If changes proceed, it could significantly alter districts, possibly reducing Republican representation in the House amidst a narrow majority.

Such mid-term outcomes could be crucial in preventing Democrats from taking control and maintaining influence during what remains of President Donald Trump’s tenure.
