Democratic Counterproposal and Government Shutdown Comments
During a recent appearance, House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) remarked that the Democratic counterproposal demonstrates that the ongoing government shutdown isn’t actually about health care. He expressed disbelief over Chuck Schumer’s claims, asking rhetorically why, if health care was the concern, Democrats submitted a lengthy 68-page counterproposal that calls for an extra $1.5 trillion in spending.
Emmer highlighted a section of the proposal where Democrats reference health care issues, which they argue justify the shutdown. He pointed out that the Affordable Care Act is at the center of the problem and insisted that it was the Democrats, not Republicans, who introduced it to the American people.
“It’s simply not affordable,” he stated, explaining that family premiums have surged 80 percent since the law’s implementation. He also mentioned the Democrats’ push to extend temporary tax credits introduced during the pandemic, which they previously allowed to expire in December as they were deemed temporary.
Emmer indicated that the Democrats’ current stance suggests that failing to update these credits could jeopardize the healthcare system, labeling this as an admission that the Affordable Care Act is making healthcare less affordable overall.
He criticized Schumer’s actions, describing them as theatrical, and noted a shift in Democratic rhetoric regarding the Affordable Care Act. Emmer described this situation as a political game played by the Democrats, where the American people end up as the ones suffering.
He also warned about the deceptive nature of their actions, mentioning that just the day before, a bill aimed at paying federal workers had been reintroduced, only to be defeated by Democrats for the second time.
