Michigan Governor’s Chief of Staff Apologizes Over Grant Controversy
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s chief of staff has reportedly issued an apology following a $20 million legislative grant that was awarded incorrectly.
In a conversation with investigators regarding the grant funds, which are now part of an embezzlement probe, Ahmad Chebani, president of the American Arab Chamber of Commerce, mentioned that Joanne Hulse, the governor’s chief of staff, visited their office in 2023 to express her regrets.
The funds were allocated to a businessman named Faye Beidun, according to reports. It has been highlighted that there are over 100 Democratic candidates tied to this funding issue.
As detailed in court documents from Attorney General Dana Nessel’s office, Chebani indicated that the Whitmer administration believed the money was supposed to benefit the intended program.
Beydoun, a Whitmer appointee, is currently under scrutiny for allegedly misappropriating taxpayer dollars after receiving $20 million from the state budget aimed at establishing a business incubator designed to attract international entrepreneurs and startups to Michigan.
This particular budget was sponsored by former House Speaker Jason Wentworth, who denies having this sponsorship role.
Whitmer has faced criticism in recent years over various funding matters. An independent audit in late 2020 revealed that her administration paid out as much as $1.5 billion in “fraudulent” unemployment claims.
Additionally, the following year, reports surfaced about her having secretly traveled to Florida on a private jet.
In a recent twist, Whitmer changed her narrative regarding the trip. Initially claiming it was “at her own expense,” she later clarified that the flight was “not a gift” and not funded by taxpayer money.
Subsequently, Hulse disclosed that the flight cost $27,521, initially funded by a “dark money” nonprofit established in 2019 to support Whitmer’s transition activities. This organization, now labeled the “Executive Directorate Account,” covered the travel expenses to a private airline. It remains uncertain whether this arrangement was premeditated or a response to the scrutiny that followed the trip.
Not long after, reports emerged suggesting that this private jet controversy could jeopardize Whitmer’s political aspirations.
