Neche’s Travis Hipsher announced his resignation Sunday. The unnamed Democrat, a security guard for a bus manufacturer, said the party “doesn’t have the numbers to continue the fight for support” at its convention later this week.

Hipsher’s withdrawal effectively clears the way for state Sen. Merrill Piepkorn of Fargo to clinch the Democratic gubernatorial race. The party faces headwinds in Republican-dominated North Dakota, where a Democrat has not won a statewide election since 2012.
The Republican Party will also hold its state convention later this week, and some candidates are campaigning for the June 11 primary, when voters will decide their nominee in November.

U.S. Representative Kelly Armstrong and Lt. Governor Tammy Miller are vying for the Republican gubernatorial nomination. Michael Coachman, an independent and a frequent candidate across the state, is also running for governor. Republican Gov. Doug Burgum is not seeking a third term.
