Eugene Vindman, the Democrat who rose to fame for blowing the whistle on an inappropriate phone call between Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, faces Republican Derrick Anderson in the battle for Virginia's 7th Congressional District. broke.
The vote rate was over 95%, with Mr. Vindman receiving 51.1% and Mr. Anderson receiving 48.9%.
Mr. Vindman, who was born in Ukraine, had no deep ties to the district, but he used his celebrity status to raise millions of dollars across the country, angering many local Democratic leaders. His anti-Trump bona fides and almost strictly pro-abortion rights push locals further into the corner.
Despite being a Democratic incumbent, the race was considered a close one by many.
In the end, the Republican hopes were dashed. Vindman declared victory late Tuesday night.
Kamala Harris won Virginia with the influence of Washington's suburbs, including the northeastern edge of the 7th District. But her share of the vote was smaller than Democrats had hoped, exposing the weaknesses President Trump has exploited in the landslides of violence across the country.
Incumbent Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-Virginia) is a relatively moderate candidate who is running for governor in 2025 and will oppose re-election to Congress. The popular Mr. Spanberger won re-election two years ago with 52.2% of the vote, a comfortable margin over Mr. Vindman.
Mr. Vindman is the identical twin of his better-known brother, Alexander Vindman, who is best known for testifying during President Trump's impeachment hearings.
Anderson, a former Green Beret, has not yet issued a statement.
Republicans appear intent on maintaining their House majority, but many races have yet to be called.
