Outgoing Representative Jared Golden, a Democrat from Maine, has publicly endorsed fellow Representative Mike Lawler, a Republican from New York, as he prepares for re-election in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections. Golden expressed his support in an op-ed, stating that the country needs more representatives who view their roles seriously rather than as performance opportunities. He highlighted Lawler’s partnership and friendship with fishing families, even though he won’t represent them.
“I fully endorse him, and I hope voters help him return to his duties,” Golden mentioned, urging constituents to support lawmakers who work across party lines.
Golden, who has been serving in Congress since early 2019, announced last year that he would not seek re-election. Meanwhile, Lawler has been in office since 2023 and is currently running for re-election.
“It’s a real honor to receive the endorsement from my friend, Democratic Congressman Jared Golden,” Lawler shared in a post on social media.
Despite their different political affiliations and geographic locations, Lawler emphasized the importance of finding common ground on pivotal issues during their time in the House. He believes prioritizing the needs of the people over party loyalty could lead to better outcomes for the country.
As for Lawler’s re-election bid, he faces a challenge from Democratic candidate Cait Conley, a combat veteran with experience on the National Security Council and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.
Recently, Conley received support from former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who attended an event for her candidacy and expressed his pride in backing her on social media.
