Warning to House Democrats Regarding Minnesota Travel
House Democratic leaders have cautioned party members against traveling to Minnesota to join protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), as reported by Axios on Thursday.
Senior aides from House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries expressed concerns that such a visit could “strain local resources” and would not effectively support the Minneapolis community, according to an email sent to the Democratic Congressional Office on Monday.
The email stated, “While we understand the intent, this visit will not adequately support our colleagues, the local government, or, most importantly, the people of Minneapolis,” as noted by Axios.
In light of this, the message encouraged members to engage in local actions instead, emphasizing that participating in their districts would be a better way to support their Minnesota counterparts.
One Democratic House member, who spoke anonymously, confirmed that this warning was also communicated in private discussions, with state officials advising against traveling to avoid overwhelming local law enforcement resources.
This email follows recent incidents, including an attack on Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar, who was sprayed with apple cider vinegar during a town hall meeting. The protests in Minnesota have intensified following the tragic shooting deaths of Renee Good and Alex Preti by federal authorities.
As of now, Jeffries’ office has not provided any immediate comments on the matter.
