Mikie Sherrill, when selecting Dale Caldwell as her running mate for the gubernatorial race in New Jersey, referred to him as a “voice for the voiceless.” Just a year later, however, she has now called for his resignation following an independent report that revealed multiple allegations of sexual and ethical misconduct against him.
Sherrill stated that there exists a long-standing culture in Trenton of ignoring such allegations. “Allegations would never be taken seriously,” she commented, adding that victims often felt compelled to resign or leave their positions instead of receiving support.
The investigation into Caldwell originated from an anonymous tip that raised concerns about his inappropriate behavior towards women. The findings suggested “credible evidence,” including a reported inappropriate remark made to a female staff member and efforts to promote a state employee he was romantically involved with.
During a press conference on Friday, Sherrill announced Caldwell’s resignation, indicating it would enable the administration to continue its work for the people of New Jersey. Caldwell, previously honored as the first black president of Centenary University and a pastor, faces accusations of making inappropriate comments, including a shocking remark about “young sperm” directed at a staffer.
Although Caldwell denied the allegations, investigators found his denial lacking in credibility. He expressed frustration at not being allowed to present witnesses or adequately contest the claims against him. “This unnecessarily protracted and one-sided process lacked the requisite due process that should be afforded every citizen of this state,” his legal representatives stated.
While Sherrill lacked the authority to dismiss Caldwell, his resignation has prevented potential impeachment proceedings. She emphasized the need for change within the state’s culture regarding how allegations are handled, highlighting that many in the statehouse doubted they would ever see a day when such claims would be taken seriously.
A group identifying themselves as black “faith, civic, and community leaders” endorsed Caldwell’s resignation in a public statement. “I will move swiftly and thoughtfully in choosing a new lieutenant governor who will represent my administration and the people of New Jersey with honor and integrity,” Sherrill pledged.
