Democrat Major Donor Cautions That Gavin Newsom's Progressive Track Record Might Undermine His 2028 Aspirations

Concerns Over Newsom’s Presidential Viability

John Morgan, a prominent Democratic donor, expressed reservations on Monday about California Governor Gavin Newsom’s chances in the presidential race, citing his progressive background as a potential liability.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi mentioned on Friday that Newsom has been receiving positive backing from both public and private channels, suggesting he would “make a great president,” according to reports. Morgan commented on NewsNation’s CUOMO that while Pelosi’s endorsement could help with fundraising, he’s uncertain whether Newsom can effectively move past his accomplishments as governor.

“Here’s the issue for him. I told him he’s become the Democratic equivalent of [former President] Donald Trump. It’s about being aggressive. It seems he thinks he can benefit from this approach, as being harsh can attract support and funds,” Morgan explained.

Newsom crafted a response mimicking Trump, using all caps in his social media posts, demonstrating a similar combative style.

“Sure, some might contribute to him, but in the long game, this is still a race. Just because you’re ahead now doesn’t mean you will be in the end,” he added, suggesting that former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and former Vice President Kamala Harris are also in the running but struggling to make significant progress.

As it stands, in the 2028 Democratic primary, Harris leads, followed by Newsom, with Buttigieg trailing.

Addressing topic surrounding transgender athletes, Newsom had previously stated that it’s unfair for biological males to compete in women’s sports, and has been involved in policies that affect women’s sports in California.

He faced criticism for a bill that made it unnecessary for schools to alert parents regarding changes in a child’s gender identity.

Additionally, in December, he wanted to meet with transgender youth, stirring some controversy.

Newsom recently endorsed legislation that positions California as a “sanctuary” for transgender children, allowing specific medical procedures without the need for parental consent, as part of an effort to bolster protections for the LGBTQ+ community.

“California aims to uphold robust laws to protect LGBTQ+ rights. We’re committed to fostering safer, more inclusive environments for everyone,” he mentioned in a statement about the new laws supporting transgender youth.
