A San Francisco mayoral debate took a bizarre turn after Democratic Mayor London Breed asked her opponent to name three LGBTQ campaign advisers and three drag queens in the city or prove her loyalty to the cause.
Breed posed the question during Monday’s debate, bringing five candidates on the same stage. Each candidate was given a chance to ask the others a question, and Breed used her opportunity to ask challenger Mark Farrell to prove his loyalty to the LGBTQ2S+ community by naming three drag queens in the city.
“I have a question for you, Mark: You attended the Harvey Milk LGBT Democratic Club and you couldn’t name a single LGBT advisor to your campaign. You couldn’t name a single drag queen at the debate last week,” Breed said.
“This is your chance for redemption. Can you name three LGBTQ advisors and three San Francisco drag queens for your campaign?” she asked.
“I’m not going to amend last week’s question about drag queens, but I’m very proud of the ex-LGBTQ+ community in San Francisco,” he said, noting that there are two members of the “queer community” on his staff, but said he wouldn’t degrade the question by specifically naming them.
“But what I’ll be doing is sticking to my track record of supporting the queer community here in the city of San Francisco. When I was a city council member, I’m the guy who, as a straight white man, wrote a bill to ensure that same-sex couples working in the city of San Francisco were taxed by the federal government for health care benefits before same-sex marriage was legal,” Farrell said, touting himself as “the guy who wrote the bill to ensure that the city of San Francisco compensates same-sex couples and that they’re treated equally in the eyes of San Franciscans and in the eyes of San Francisco City Hall.”
“I will defend that record and look forward to the continued support from the queer community throughout the city of San Francisco,” he added.

Ironically, when fellow candidate Danielle Lowry posed a “simple question” to Mayor Breed, asking her to name three nonprofits she had cut due to poor performance, the Mayor ultimately responded, “I could probably give you examples, but I just don’t want to do that here today.”

Mayor Breed drew national attention in September 2021 when she openly partied without masks at the city’s Black Cat nightclub, violating city rules requiring “nearly everyone” to wear face coverings in indoor public areas — another example of the elites’ refusal to follow their own rules at the time.
