The Democratic mayor of Atlantic City, New Jersey, and the wife of the Atlantic City Public Schools superintendent are accused of “physically and emotionally” abusing their teenage daughter several months ago.
according to statement Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Mayor Marty Small Sr., 50, and Superintendent La Quetta Small, 47, abused the daughter multiple times in December and January. The statement said Mayor Small hit the girl with a broomstick to “knock her unconscious,” repeatedly threatened to throw her down the stairs and “slam her to the ground,” grabbed her by the head and threw her to the ground, and “punched her in the head.” “It was,” he accused. “The charges filed today by the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office do not include allegations of official corruption or Mayor Small’s failure to perform his duties as mayor,” said Small’s attorney, Ed Jacobs.
Small first took office in October 2019 following the resignation of Democratic Mayor Frank Gilliam, who pleaded guilty to wire fraud.
The criminal charges against the Smalls come after weeks of speculation after a raid on their home last month. During the raid, which lasted about three and a half hours, police reportedly seized mobile phones and computers.

Days Chapman did not respond to WPVI’s request for comment. The district also did not respond to the media’s request for comment regarding her arrest. WPVI claimed it sought someone in the district who could issue a statement regarding Superintendent Small’s arrest and current job status, but was “unable to contact anyone.”
