Despite Republicans’ slim majority in the House, the longtime lawmaker’s death may not affect House votes for the remainder of the session.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) is likely to continue his working relationship with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-New York) to pass spending bills approved by Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York). Rather than wield the hammer to advance conservative priorities, Johnson is expected to again expand on President Joe Biden’s spending levels and priorities that Schumer and then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) first approved during the lame-duck session in December 2022.
