Democrat Representative Proposes Marjorie Taylor Greene Join Their Party in Unusual 'Big Tent' Appeal

Raskin Invites Greene to Join Democrats

Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin from Maryland mentioned on Sunday that there’s “room” for Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene if she ever wishes to switch parties.

During a lively speech at a fundraising brunch organized by the Miami-Dade Democratic Party in South Florida, Raskin, who serves as the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, framed the party as a welcoming “big tent” open to Greene, a far-right conservative. He went so far as to suggest that Democrats are the true “conservative” party, while labeling the Republicans as “authoritarian.”

“We’re a big tent,” Raskin stated, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity within the Democratic Party. “If Marjorie Taylor Greene wants to come, I say there’s room in this party. There’s room for anyone who wants to stand up for the Constitution and the Bill of Rights today.”

Raskin also shared an anecdote from a past exchange with Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy of South Carolina. He recounted how Gowdy remarked, “Raskin, it’s not your fault. Your problem is that you’re a liberal.” To which Raskin replied, “That’s right, I’m a liberal. The essence of that word is freedom.” He added that he self-identifies as a progressive because “the heart of that word is progress.”

Raskin then passionately expressed his desire to safeguard various pillars of American democracy, such as clean air and water, healthcare programs like Medicare and Medicaid, and legislative acts like the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act. “Everything that the authoritarian party is trying to destroy is everything we are going to preserve and protect in America. We are the party of conservatives, liberals, and progressives, and every patriot today is in the Democratic Party,” he asserted.

Raskin gained notoriety for his role as one of the House impeachment managers during Donald Trump’s second impeachment in 2021 and has served in various capacities leading to his current position on the Judiciary Committee.

In contrast, Greene, who represents a largely Republican district in Georgia, recently faced criticism from former President Trump. He indicated he would not support her re-election in 2026, referring to her behavior as “bizarre” and saying she had “gone to the far left.” Greene, in response to this, maintained her support for Trump despite his withdrawal of endorsement. Interestingly, she criticized the Trump administration’s handling of certain issues, indicating a slight rift in their relationship.

Greene was previously a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus but is reportedly being removed from that rank this year.
