Rep. Kanna Calls for Change in Democratic Party
Rep. Ro Kanna emphasized the need for transformation within the Democratic Party during his remarks at a summit for young progressives in Washington, DC. He posed a critical question: “Can we trust governments to accomplish significant tasks when corruption exists?” He urged his peers to combat the influence of money in politics, arguing that it’s crucial for building a more equitable future for the working class.
During his speech, Kanna brought up the ongoing discussions surrounding Jeffrey Epstein’s files, highlighting the importance of transparency in government. “The release of the Epstein Files won’t magically restore trust, but it’s a start,” he noted, calling it a step towards a more transparent governance.
Kanna stressed that it’s time for a change in leadership. “The old guards need to go. The current system isn’t working,” he said, advocating for a rebirth of the party that prioritizes human rights and the needs of the working class, as well as addressing the concerns of major donors.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris was also set to make a virtual appearance at the summit, alongside former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who expressed confidence in winning back the House of Representatives. “We’re sure to win, no doubt,” she stated strongly.
Pelosi highlighted the importance of preparation as the next election approaches, emphasizing the need for mobilization and funding to support their candidates effectively.
The summit featured participation from younger Democratic figures like freshman Arizona Rep. Yassamine Ansari and Illinois candidate Kat Abugazare, signaling the party’s focus on engaging new voices and perspectives.
Kanna’s speech reflects the broader challenges Democrats face, especially in light of the changing demographics following the last election. With the 2026 elections on the horizon, there is an opportunity to better understand the preferences of Gen Z voters, who first participated in the electoral process in 2022 and 2024.
While some in the party are pushing for a more centrist approach, Kanna’s message resonates with those who crave a more populist direction. “This party needs the courage to advocate for immigration rights, rather than shying away from these discussions,” he remarked, encouraging the need for fresh voices in Congress.
He concluded with a call to action for a new movement within the party, stating, “It’s time to reclaim our party and reclaim our country.” His vision presents a bold framework for what he believes is needed to lead the country towards a better future.
