Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.) accused his party of not allowing criticism and debate on hot-button issues such as: Trans women athletes participating in women's sports.
Moulton came under fire over the weekend for an interview with the New York Times in which he criticized Democrats for refusing to discuss issues that concern ordinary Americans.
“Democrats spend too much time trying not to offend anyone, rather than being brutally honest about the challenges facing many Americans. I have two little girls, and I don't want them to be run over by a man or a former male athlete on the field, but as a Democrat I should be scared to say that,” Moulton said.
Moulton's comments prompted a backlash from progressives. one of his close aides. Shortly after Moulton's interview with the Times, his campaign manager, Matt Chiriak, resigned.
Democratic operative posted to X shortly after former President Donald trump won “Today, millions of Americans showed that they hate immigrants and transgender people even more than they fear fascism,” he said in an election early Wednesday morning.
“I was just being honest as a parent on one of the many issues on which Democrats disagree with the majority of Americans, and even though I didn’t use exactly the right words. I will stand my ground, and I will have this discussion as I have in the past with LGBTQ advocates and others, some of whom agree with me. , some people disagree. But we're having a thoughtful discussion,” Moulton said.
“On the other hand, some people like the ones you mention are simply interested in shaming their fellow Democrats and shaming the majority of voters when they don't meet the test of ideological purity. And they're the same people who told us to defund the police, who told us there was nothing wrong with the southern border, and what does that mean? The same people who told us that inflation was temporary anyway, and the same people who attacked me when I said that. [President] Biden will lose this election and should leave. ”
“So we need to be proactive in having these discussions within our party. Republicans are banning books. Democrats are banning debate. And if we don't have this discussion now, we won't win in the future.” “If we don't come up with a strategy, Republicans will be wiping the floor with us in January just like they did last Tuesday,” he continued.
Despite facing public backlash, Moulton said most of the messages he has received have been supportive and that his ideas are “just right.”
“This is our problem. We tried to cancel participants instead of actually discussing issues that Americans care about. And this is bigger than transgender issues. It's a problem. It's an economic problem,” Moulton said.
Moulton described how the Republican Party has increased its credibility on the economy and border issues despite President Trump's proposals, but this is due to the party's refusal to reach out to the American people. Mr. Moulton believes that
“We have to reach the majority of Americans, and we can't do that if we just preach and don't listen. We have to listen to the American voters. We have to lean in and have this discussion. If people in our party can't even have this discussion, what will happen to American voters?'' Moulton said.
The congressman also responded to the backlash in a statement to Fox News Digital.
“I strongly believe in the need for competitive women's sports to limit the participation of those who have an unfair physical advantage due to being born male,” he said. “I also strongly support civil rights for all Americans, including transgender rights. I will continue to fight for the rights and safety of all of our citizens, as I have always done. These two ideas are mutually exclusive. It is not exclusive and opinions may differ.
“But there are many people screaming from the far left on social media who believe I have failed the implicit Democratic purity test. We will lose the 2024 election because of transgender people and issues. “We lost in part because we shamed and disrespected the opinions of too many voters, and that has to stop.” “Let's have a debate now to determine a new strategy for a party whose existing strategy has failed, and unite to oppose Trump's policies that endanger American values.”
