Democrat Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, facing indictment, submitted her reelection papers just days before stepping down from Congress.

Former Rep. Sheila Chafferas McCormick (D-Fla.) resigned this week but is in the process of registering for re-election amid serious allegations of misconduct related to $5 million in FEMA disaster relief funds.

“This raises some eyebrows about whether McCormick truly thinks she can remain in office while dealing with such scrutiny,” the report indicated.

Her resignation comes just prior to the House Ethics Committee contemplating potential sanctions against her, following extensive legal concerns and ethical inquiries, as noted by Breitbart News.

A federal grand jury in Miami indicted McCormick in November 2025. She and her brother, Edwin, are accused of misusing $5 million in FEMA overpayments from a coronavirus vaccination contract via their family business, Trinity Healthcare Services.

The indictment claims that parts of the funds were funneled through various accounts to finance McCormick’s 2021 Congressional campaign, make straw donations, and for personal uses. She faces charges for conspiring with former tax agent David K. Spencer to submit false federal tax returns. McCormick has pleaded not guilty and denies any wrongdoing.

In her resignation statement, McCormick expressed she felt “prevented” from adequately defending herself and described the investigation as a “witch hunt.”

“Instead of getting caught up in these political games, I’ve decided to focus my efforts on supporting my constituents in Florida’s 20th District,” she stated.

“This fight is not over yet,” some Democrats have concluded.

In January, authorities revealed they had found “substantial evidence” in their fraud investigation involving McCormick. However, one of her attorneys maintained at that time that “Rep. Chafferas McCormick disputes and refutes the allegations and report of the Ethics Committee’s Investigations Subcommittee.”
